Research Finds Mobile Image Correction Offers Market-Defining Opportunities for Wireless Carriers

A recent consumer study shows that automatic enhancement of camera phone images leads to behavioral changes that offer exceptional market opportunities for wireless carriers to increase minutes used, images shared, and revenue gained.

Austin, Texas, October 7, 2005 — SozoTek, the leading developer of innovative image quality advancement technologies, released today the results of a comprehensive consumer research study on attitudes regarding camera phone usage. The study, by Interminds, LLC, found that wireless carriers have a significant opportunity to take direct control over camera phone image quality, directly managing the satisfaction levels and usage rates of their camera-phone related services.

They study found that nearly 50% of camera phone users would increase image sharing with improved image quality, and over 40% of consumers would pay more per month for their wireless plan to include automated image correction. This indicates a substantial new opportunity for wireless carriers to exploit the brand advantage, service adoption and revenue potential from camera phones.

Highlights from the study include:
  • Carriers currently bypass significant revenues and customer lifecycle management opportunities by not offering automated image correction.
  • Fully automated in-network technologies are critical to providing behavior changing service offerings.
  • 63% of camera phone owners would consider changing carriers to gain access to automated image correction features.
  • Nearly 50% of consumers would increase image sharing via their mobile phone with improved image quality.
  • Over 40% of consumers would pay more per month for their wireless plan to include automated correction of their camera phone images.
Based on the image improvement offered via SozoTek’s Clario™ in-network image enhancement technology, consumers stated they expected significant behavioral changes to occur with 79.9% expecting to take and share more photographs via their camera phone, including 64.6% expecting to increase camera phone usage by more than 60%. The mean number of images expected to be taken if the wireless provider offered in-network image enhancement was 13.58 images per week, a substantial increase over the survey participants’ current 6.74 average images per week.

The number of images expected to be shared each week increased from 32% to 48.65%, an increase of over 16%, suggesting a ready market for gaining additional revenues based on increased sharing of images

The research strongly indicates it is the wireless carriers, not the handset manufacturers, who have the most to gain by taking control over image quality. The ability to increase wireless plan usage amongst camera phone subscribers is directly proportional to the ability of the end user to obtain and share better quality images.

Interminds, LLC and its research partner, Sentient Services, conducted the in-depth research project involving 600 participants between August and October 2005 to uncover attitudes regarding camera phone usage. In particular, Interminds sought to study the impact of enhanced image quality on camera phone and image sharing usage; perceived value of improved camera phone quality; perceived value of improved image quality when addressed within the wireless carrier network; and consumer preferences between major image correction/enhancement technology providers.
